For the first time ever, a supersonic racing car that’s designed to hit 1,000 mph is going to be tested.

During a free exhibition last year at east London’s Canary Wharf, eight thousand spectators came out to see the Bloodhound SSC. The event sold out within days of the announcement. And now in even bigger news, the Bloodhound is getting ready for its first test drive.

Created by a team of Formula 1 and aerospace experts, with the help of Mechanical Engineers and technicians from the RAF, The Bloodhound is expected to break a 20-year-old land speed record that currently sits at 763 mph.

After more than eight years of research and manufacturing, The Bloodhound is about to undergo runway trials. On October 26, the car will move from the project workshop in Bristol to Cornwall Airport Newquay’s runway.

The car’s design is a mix of automobile and aircraft technology. The front section is a carbon fiber monocoque – a single piece shell, like a racing car – with the back portion of the car built with metal framework and panels, like a plane.

With its multiple carbon fiber layers, project designers describe it as “probably the strongest safety-cell ever fitted to a racing car.”

The Bloodhound will undergo trial runs to test its systems for faults.
