Humans are incredible: we’re constantly pushing the limits of our own ability and the advancement of technology.

So, what happens when technology and physical ability work together?

That’s exactly what Claire Lomas did when she walked the 10-mile Great South Run in 24 hours, with the help of an incredible bionic suit.

Pushing it to the limit

Lomas is used to pushing herself to the limit. In 2007, she broke her back in a horse-riding accident, leaving her paralyzed from the chest down.

Regardless of the hardships, Lomas has gone on to raise over £575,000 for charity by participating in a number of demanding endurance events.

Today, she’s the first person to successfully complete a marathon in her Rewalk Suit – a robotic exoskeleton that allows her to walk.

10 miles in 24 hours

Lomas’ latest challenge has been considered her “toughest to date” as she walked day and night in order to finish the 10-mile run in 24 hours.

As she walked, she posted regular updates to Twitter and even uploaded a video of her singing Bon Jovi’s Livin’ On A Prayer at the halfway point.

With one mile to go, she tweeted: Help me get to last mile as sooo tired.”

Without sleep, but equipped with her suit and a pair of crutches, Claire crossed the finish line after battling rain, wind, and exhaustion.

A tearful moment and a beacon of hope

Met at the finish line by her two daughters (one five years old and the other nine months old), Lomas was overwhelmed with emotion.

After the race was finished she said she was “really grateful to everyone that supported me…I had a few tears.”

Ten years after her accident Claire says she would have loved if someone could have told her what the future had in store for her. After so many bleak days, she’s glad she forced herself to take so many small opportunities that have led to bigger things.

An inspiration to everyone

Claire is a shining example of what courage and commitment are capable of achieving, along with the help of some amazingly cool technology. Regardless of her physical limitations, Claire has proven that anything is possible.
