Toronto Blue Jays’ Pillar donating suspension salary to LGBTQ groups

Toronto Blue Jays fielder Kevin Pillar to donate salary from 2-game suspension to LBGTQ groups.

He already apologized, but Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Kevin Pillar wanted to do more to make up for his anti-gay slur during a game in May.

The 28-year-old yelled an anti-gay slur at Atlanta Braves reliever Jason Motte during a May 17th game. He issued an apology afterwards, blaming the heat of the moment for his slip-of-the-tongue, but faced disciplinary action from the Blue Jays.

“It’s not lip service,” said Pillar, according to ESPN. “It’s easy to come out and make your apologies and hope people forget, but I meant what I said when I said hopefully I’ll be made an example of.”

To show just how serious he is, Pillar plans to donate his forfeited salary from his two-game suspension, served in May, to LGBTQ groups in Toronto.

Pillar chose two groups to donate to. The first is PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), which is an advocacy and support group for friends and families of those in the LGBTQ community.

The second group, You Can Play, was launched by Patrick Burke, the son of former Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke, in 2012. You Can Play is a campaign dedicated to eliminating homophobia in sports.

To start Thursday’s Blue Jays game against the New York Yankees, Pillar caught the ceremonial first pitch from Pride Toronto’s board of director’s member Michelle Cherny.

Several teams across the MLB are honoring Pride Month with LGBTQ community nights, which will carry on throughout the season.

ESPN reports that Pillar will undergo sensitivity training from PFLAG.

“There are still some things that are going to be done,” Pillar said. “My actions didn’t just affect me, they affected this organization as well, and between me and the organization, we’re going to do our part.”
