Tiger Woods arrested with DUI charges in Florida

Golf player Tiger Woods arrested and charged with a DUI on Monday in Florida.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Tiger Woods was arrested and charged with suspicion of driving under the influence, continuing his epic fall from grace.

The golf great was pulled over around 3 a.m. Monday morning near his restaurant, The Woods, and taken to the Palm Beach County jail, WPBF reports. At 10:50 a.m. police released him on his own recognizance.

According to TMZ, police saw Woods “driving erratically,” and pulled him over. The officer reportedly smelled alcohol on the golfer’s breath, but he refused a breathalyzer which means automatic arrest in the state.

Woods was a golf prodigy on his way to breaking Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 major championship wins, until scandal rocked his career and personal life. He hasn’t won a major title since 2008 or finished first in any tournament since 2013.

This is the first trouble Woods has been in off the course since a 2009 incident where he drove his SUV into a tree. This led to a very public scandal revealing his multiple affairs. He was not charged with a DUI for the incident, though his marriage to wife Elin Nordegren ended the following year.

Woods has been plagued with health issues for years, causing him to miss the 2016 golf season while he recovered from back surgery. Though he returned to the PGA tour in February, his game continued to struggle before he announced in April that he was pulling out of the rest of the 2017 season for his fourth back surgery.

He gave fans an update on his recovery earlier this week on his website.

“It has been just over a month since I underwent fusion surgery on my back, and it is hard to express how much better I feel. It was instant nerve relief. I haven’t felt this good in years,” Woods wrote.

“I could no longer live with the pain I had. We tried every possible non-surgical route and nothing worked. I had good days and bad days, but the pain was usually there, and I couldn’t do much. Even lying down hurt. I had nerve pain with anything I did and was at the end of my rope.”
