Bryce Harper and Hunter Strickland start massive brawl on the mound

Some players will shrug off getting hit by a pitch, but when Bryce Harper took a heater to the hip, he charged the mound and threw a few of his own.

After San Francisco Giants pitcher Hunter Strickland nailed Nationals fielder Bryce Harper in the hip with a fastball in the eighth inning, he charged the mound, wildly tossing his helmet.

A rather ugly brawl ensued, with both fists and hair flying before both teams rushed the field to split it up.

“You never want to get suspended or anything like, but sometimes you just got to go and get them and can’t hesitate,” Harper said. “You either go to first base or you go after him and I decided to go after him.”

The brawl made fans question if history between the two played a part in the wild pitch. In the 2014 playoffs, Harper homered twice off Strickland though he trash-talked the pitcher, yelling, “again, baby!” as he took his time around the bases.

“Yeah, I can see how that kind of stands in people’s minds, but that’s the past,” Strickland said of their history. “I left the ball over the plate a couple of times to him, and he’s taken advantage of that. So obviously, I’d rather miss in than over the plate.”

Strickland pretty much admitted he’d rather hit Harper than risk a homer. Harper also recalled the incident.

“It’s so in the past that it’s not even relevant anymore,” he said. “They won the World Series that year. I don’t even think he should be thinking about what happened in the first round. He should be thinking about wearing that ring home every single night. I don’t know why he did it or what he did it for, but I guess it happens.”

Oddly enough, Harper said if Strickland’s throw was intentional, he did it right.

“One thing I’ve got to say about Strickland is he hit me in the right spot, so I do respect him for that,” Harper said. “He didn’t come up and in toward my face like some guys do, so I respect him on that level.”

In other words: If you’re going to hit me, don’t hit my face.

Both Strickland and Harper could face suspensions for the brawl. Of course, Twitter had a field day with the brawl, and Harper’s hair.
