7 yoga poses to help you sleep

Sometimes sleep can be hard to come by. Part of the reason this happens is that we haven’t exercised or used our bodies enough during the day. The other part is because we haven’t given our minds enough time to settle down and be quiet. Here are seven yoga poses that you can do before bed to help you sleep.

1. Hero pose (Virasana)

To start off your yoga for the evening get yourself into hero pose. As you focus on your breathing your brain will slow down, your breaths will get deeper, and your body will begin to relax.

2. Cat and cow pose (Marjaryasana and Bitilasana)

From hero pose roll onto your hands and knees. These next two poses usually done together will help stretch out your back and further your relaxation. Tilt your tailbone and the crown of your head down to the floor as you exhale. Your back should be rounded (that’s cat pose). Then on the inhale bring the crown of your head and your tailbone to the ceiling and your spine will bottom out (that’s cow pose).

3. Head-to-knee pose (Janu Sirsasana)

In this pose, you’re stretching out your back and your legs. Stretch one leg out straight and bend the other in half like the picture below. Reach forward and stretch as far as you can. Repeat on the other side.

4. Bound eagle pose (Baddha Konasana)

Bring your feet together to make butterfly wings with your legs. Sit up straight and on your exhale use your elbows to push your knees towards the floor.
