How to make cash selling your old clothes

If you’re like us, you have too many clothes. They’re falling out of drawers, there’s no space for them in your closet, and then you go out and buy new ones. While you have too many clothes, you, most likely, don’t have enough cash, so here’s how to make cash selling your old clothes.

Figure out what’s sellable

The first thing you need to do before you can sell your old clothes is figure out what’s actually sellable. When you go through your clothes you should make three different piles. Pile one is for clothes that are just going to be thrown out or cut up into rags. Those are the ones that are too holey, have weird stains on them, etc. Pile two is the donation pile. This is for stuff that is worn and that you’re never going to wear again, but that you don’t think people will buy. Pile three is for the items that you’re going to sell.

Where to sell: thrift stores

If you’re interested in selling your clothes to a store, research the different thrift stores and consignment shops in your area. Note the kind of clothes that they sell, and call ahead to ask what their procedure is for buying clothes. Make it easy for them to buy from you because really, they’re doing you the favor by purchasing the clothes.

Where to sell: online

Selling old clothes online is a growing industry. Actually, it’s a $16 billion industry. It can seem like a lot of work to sell clothes online, but it really isn’t. There are many different apps that allow you to sell clothes through them (and purchase clothing through them). One of the best ones is called Poshmark. Poshmark is only available in the US, so you’re buying and selling clothes within the country. Some women have actually made a full-time job out of buying and selling clothes on the app. Some other apps include Twice, ThredUp, or SnobSwap. Check them out and find one that works best for you.

Selling your old clothes can be a breeze with all of the different options that are out there. Do your research, and figure out which option works best for the clothing that you want to sell. Soon enough you’ll have some extra cash in your pocket and some extra space in your closest.
