Triplets take ancestry test and are shocked by their results

DNA tests should be accurate, right? That’s what the Dahm triplets thought when they took an at-home DNA ancestry test for TV’s The Doctors. Being triplets should mean their DNA results are also identical, but their results were a little surprising.

The lovely identical triplets, Nicole, Erica and Jaclyn, are former Playboy playmates from Minnesota. Not only are they beautiful, they are so identical even their parents had trouble telling them apart so they tattooed dots on their behinds to avoid confusion.

Their genetics also landed them roles on television shows including Boy Meets World, Family Feud and Renovate My Family. With such identical DNA, they should have the same heritage, right? Not so fast.

To run the DNA test, the triplets had to spit in a cup and the cups were sent off to be analyzed. When the results were ready a couple weeks later, they visited The Doctors to have their results analyzed. What they found was more than a little surprising.

On the show, The Doctors and Inside Edition journalist Lisa Guerrero spoke about the odd test results, telling the triplets there were some discrepancies.

“You are all 99 percent European,” Lisa tells the ladies. “That’s not a big surprise, but now we’re going to get a little more specific.”

This is where things get complicated.

Comparing how much British and Irish ancestry the triplets have, Lisa reveals that Erica had only 16 percent, whereas Jaclyn had 18.9 percent. Shocking, right? The identical triplets have identical DNA!

“I’m surprised,” Nicole said. “I’m surprised because we came from the same egg and DNA. How are our ancestries different?”

As shocking as the results were, there was more to come.

Comparing their French and German percentages, Lisa reveals an even bigger gap. Where Nicole has 11 percent French and German heritage, Erica has 22.3 percent – More than 10 percent difference.

How is this possible?

“I think the answer here is that we’ve come so far in terms of genetic testing, but you can’t just spit in a cup and have every single answer that you are looking for,” said co-host Dr. Travis Stork.

Inside Edition decided to try the tests on a set of triplets and quadruplets.

The Maynard Triplets, Erin, Mandy and Melissa, who once appeared on American Idol, took the test and also displayed some major differences.

Inside Edition tested for British Isles heritage and found another huge discrepancy in the range of numbers. Where Erin had 59 percent, Melissa had a whopping 70 percent.

A slight variation is acceptable but how is there an 11 percent difference?

Next came the Pyfrom quadruplets, Christina, Janelle, Jodi and Catherine.

The quads are a combination of European and African heritage. Finally, the results were a little closer.

And by closer, we mean identical. When tested for West African descent, the four ladies had a perfect 46 percent across the board. Finally, the at-home ancestry tests gain back a little credibility.

What do doctors think of the reliability of these types of DNA tests?

As DNA expert Dr. David Ku of Universal Genetics told Inside Edition, “Their ancestry should be absolutely identical.”

We can’t rely on spitting into a cup to give us perfect results, but it is closer than previous methods used. If nothing else, it’s a fun way to find out a little more about your ancestry.
