Actress Carrie Fisher, best known for her role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars franchise, died after suffering a heart attack at the age of 60.

Simon Halls, spokesman for the family, released a statement on behalf of Billie Lourd, Fisher’s daughter:

“It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning,” reads the statement.

“She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers.”

On December 23, Fisher was on a flight from London to Los Angeles when she went into cardiac arrest. Paramedics removed the actress from the flight and brought her to hospital where she later died.

Fisher was the daughter of Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher, and grew up in the world of film and television. She married singer Paul Simon in 1983 and divorced the next year.

She was only 19 when she starred in the first Star Wars film as the icon Princess Leia. Fisher reprised the role for last year’s The Force Awakens. She penned a memoir on the experience titled The Princess Diarist.

Her problem with drug abuse was featured in her semi-autobiographical novel, Postcards from the Edge.  The novel later became a movie starring Meryl Streep. Her Wishful Drinking autobiography became a one-woman stage show.

The actress became an advocate for mental health awareness after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

In The Princess Diarist, Fisher revealed her on-set affair with Star Wars co-star Harrison Ford. She told People “It was so intense.” The memoir was based on her old notebooks and diaries.

“I had forgotten that I’d written them, and I’ve never written diaries sort of like that,” Fisher said. “I write when I’m upset. It was about two or three months of upset.”

She added, “It was sad because I was so insecure, and it’s very raw and obviously I didn’t expect anyone — including myself, I suppose later on — to read it.”
