5 ex-celebs who are completely broke today

We all love to fantasize about what we’d do with fame and fortune. Well, these ex-celebs had them both and found a way to lose them too. Here are some names you might recognize that did just that.

1. Aaron Carter

The preteen pop singer found himself filing for bankruptcy in 2013, despite selling over 10 million albums worldwide in the last 20 years. Carter, now 30 (feel old?), was more than $3.5 million in debt, mostly from not paying his taxes since his popularity began in the late ’90s. Looks like Aaron’s Party (2000) is over.

2. Toni Braxton

Now, it’s hard to blame Toni Braxton for declaring bankruptcy in 1998, as a bad record contract only earned her around $2,000 worth of royalties, peanuts compared to the money the record company made on her hits like “Another Sad Love Song” and “Breathe Again.” What’s worse? When health problems forced her to cancel her 2010 tour, the insurance company nullified her contract, which left Braxton on the hook for all the damages of canceled shows, which led her to file for bankruptcy again.

3. David Cassidy

Life post-The Partridge Family has been tough for David Cassidy. Despite the success he had as a pop-singing teen idol after the show, a trio of DUI’s and alcohol abuse led to divorce in 2014, and eventually bankruptcy in 2015. The show’s declining popularity into the 2000s led to continuously diminishing royalty checks, and now in his late 60s, his health limited his ability to perform as a singer. He announced his retirement in February of this year.

4. Abby Lee Miller

Before Dance Moms star Abby Lee Miller rose to reality TV fame, she somehow owed a whopping $400,000 in unpaid taxes, which led to her filing for bankruptcy in 2010. When she hit her big break on the Lifetime reality show a year later, she created secret bank accounts to hide the money that would have gone to the government (per her bankruptcy filing) and eventually got caught for it in 2015. After multiple delays in her case, she was sentenced to a year in prison, and will likely come out more broke than ever.

5. Teresa Giudice

Another reality TV star, The Real Housewives of New Jersey‘s Teresa Giudice filed for bankruptcy in 2009 and was charged with fraud four years later after it was found she and her husband hid their finances and assets from the government. She was released in December of 2015 while her husband is still serving his sentence.
